Pelvic Health Services Come to Plainville
April 01, 2016
A team of expert Hartford HealthCare physicians specializing in pelvic health is opening an office in Plainville this month, and that’s good news for women in the area who may be suffering needlessly from urinary incontinence or pelvic floor disorders.
The team consists of urogynecologists Dr. Adam Steinberg and Dr. Elena Tunitsky, as well as urologist Dr. Richard Kershen.
The pelvic floor is made up of muscles, ligaments, nerves and other structures that support the function of pelvic organs: the bladder, uterus, vagina and rectum. Pelvic floor structures may weaken due to pregnancy, childbirth, age, disease, obesity, injury or other factors. The most common pelvic floor disorders are urinary incontinence (leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, etc., or urgency to get to a bathroom) and pelvic organ prolapse (when pelvic organs—most often the bladder—drop into the vagina), which can cause discomfort and other symptoms.
Generations of women have suffered in silence from such symptoms. But with expert physicians and today’s treatments, the vast majority of women can live the lives they want, symptom-free.
These problems are often embarrassing for women to bring up. They’re afraid there’s no treatment, or they think they’re the only ones suffering. But there are a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatments available today.
People often live with these problems for a long time, and it limits their quality of life. The goal is to get people to have the courage to come and be evaluated. There are many treatment options. In fact, 95 percent of the patients providers see can be helped.
Our goal as fellowship-trained specialists is to provide patients with knowledge on the issues and improve their quality of life by providing them with the best experience they can have through our providers’ time, interactions and surgical expertise.
All of the Plainville providers are nationally known experts in pelvic medicine. All have extensive experience and advanced training. They are current with both surgical and nonsurgical treatments, are experts in minimally invasive surgical procedures and offer comprehensive care.
The Plainville center has state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment. Once a patient’s specific problem is identified, she and her doctor work together to choose the best treatment option.
Patients are viewed as individuals. We have options which are as non-invasive, such as education and behavioral modifications, in addition to other solutions that involve minimally invasive surgical procedures. Treatments are tailored to each patient.
Treatments range from pelvic floor physical therapy, medication, nerve stimulation or Botox injections to surgeries that help return the pelvic organs to their normal position.
Having a team of experts working together, all focused on complex pelvic health issues, benefits patients.
Just as important, the center’s team is committed to ensuring a good experience for every patient.
Our entire team prides themselves on being open and welcoming with patients and making them feel comfortable.
We know there are others providing similar services, but our service line has been recognized for excellence on a national level secondary to our clinical knowledge, patient experience and multidisciplinary approach.
Women who seek care at the Plainville practice can count on receiving sensitive, high-quality care provided by experts.
The pelvic health practice is located at the Medical Arts Center, 201 North Mountain Road, Plainville. For more information, call 1-855-HHC-HERE.
