What is tomosynthesis?
Tomosynthesis is a 3D mammogram which requires multiple images. In traditional or 2D mammography, the breast tissue is viewed as one single image. Tomosynthesis allows the radiologist to see through overlapping tissue. Overlapping tissue is a common issue with dense breasts, but can be an issue with fatty breasts as well.
What are the benefits of tomosynthesis?
Research has shown that tomosynthesis can decrease call back rates, increase cancer detection rates, and decrease biopsy rates.
Who qualifies for tomosynthesis?
At HOCC, tomosynthesis is available to all patients who are due for their annual screening mammogram. Women with dense breasts are likely to benefit the most from
tomosynthesis.
What should I expect?
Positioning for tomosynthesis is very similar to a traditional (2D) mammogram. The breast tissue will be compressed in a similar manner as well. Rather than staying stationary, the X-ray arm sweeps in an arc over the breast.
How long does tomosynthesis take?
The time to complete a 3D mammogram is very similar to a traditional mammogram. Both the 2D and 3D images will be obtained consecutively. Most patients will not notice any significant time difference.
What does tomosynthesis cost?
Many insurance companies cover tomosynthesis. However, their coverage may vary, requiring patients to be responsible for a portion of the bill. We recommend calling ahead to your coverage provider so that you will know exactly what to expect.
What is my radiation exposure during tomosynthesis?
Tomosynthesis uses low dose radiation, similar to that of traditional mammograms. The radiation dose is approximately twice when doing standard 2D mammography along with tomosynthesis. The benefits of adding tomosynthesis (increased cancer detection rate, decreased call back rate, etc.) are felt to outweigh any potential radiation risk. The FDA has found the combination of tomosynthesis and standard mammography a safe and effective way to screen patients, with doses below the regulated limit.
How will I get my tomosynthesis results?
All patients will receive their results by mail, as they have in the past. Your referring physician will also be informed of your results.
What happens if I choose not to have tomosynthesis?
Tomosynthesis is an optional service at this time. Patients electing not to have tomosynthesis will receive a standard 2D digital mammogram at one of our accredited facilities.
