The Mission of the Hospital of Central Connecticut’s PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program:
Our PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on PharmD education and outcomes to contribute to the development of a clinical pharmacist responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
What makes our program unique?
- Our program provides a close-knit, supportive training environment while also being connected to a large healthcare system where residents have the opportunity to complete specialized elective rotations within Hartford HealthCare including several new ambulatory care clinics.
- Residents network and collaborate with their peers within the four Hartford HealthCare residency programs when participating in the UConn Teaching & Learning certificate program and professional development series.
- Being part of a residency program with two residents offers more individual attention, mentoring, and flexibility.
- Each resident selects a mentor who advocates for their success, facilitates communication among preceptors, and promotes well-being.
- Residents have many opportunities to gain experience precepting pharmacy students and teaching lectures at local schools of pharmacy.
- We have an excellent team of enthusiastic and experienced preceptors with specialists in multiple areas of the hospital who deliver robust learning experiences.
- Residents complete a research project with the support of a dedicated mentor and a statistician to help them successfully design and conduct a high-quality study.

Wellness and Resiliency
The Hospital of Central Connecticut PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency preceptors and residents are provided with several resources to promote wellness and resiliency. Each resident is paired with a preceptor mentor that lends guidance, expertise, and support throughout the year. A residency huddle is conducted weekly that recognizes preceptors and residents who demonstrate discretionary efforts, tracks wellness, and provide tips to better manage stress. Educational presentations are offered to residents and preceptors that focus on strategies to promote well-being and prevent burnout. Residents are given a day off following their staffing weekend to recover mentally and physically after working a long-stretch of days in a row. The pharmacy department also hosts many events during the holidays and has a social gathering once a month at local venues near the hospital which provides a great way to get to know each other outside of work.
Hartford HealthCare offers many other resources to encourage wellness including the HHC Colleague Well-Being App and Wellness Wednesdays webinars.
